Dick Marsh

1851 - 1933


Richard John Marsh was born in Smeeth in Kent on December 30, 1851, and made his public debut on Argile the Exile at Dover on August 19, 1864. His first winner was Manrico at Dover in 1866.

Dick Marsh was the son of a Kentish hop-farmer.

Growing too heavy for the Flat, he switched codes and found much success over the jumps.

In 1874 he began training at Newmarket continued to ride also until 1881. He rode his last winner at Kempton.

He finished third in the 1881 National on Thornfield.

Twice married, he became one of the Flat's great trainers, winning four Derbies.

His son, Marcus, (1904 -1983) by his second wife, also became a great trainer.

Dick Marsh, as a jockey, won the 1873 Bristol Grand Annual on Phryne and the 1870 Sefton Chase on The Nun.

He died on May 20, 1933. He left £383.

He was buried at All Saints' Church, Little Shalford.
