Edward Matthews

(1866-1939)

Edward Matthews was born at St Fagans, Glamorgan, in 1866. He rode 219 winners under National Hunt rules and finished fourth in the 1902 jump jockeys' table with 44 winners.

Six of those 1902 wins came courtesy of a mare named Lady Massey, on which he won five races in a row in the early part of the year, culminating in the Dunstall Park Hurdle, which was at that time a relatively valuable race. Later in the year he rode Lady Massey to win Liverpool’s November Handicap Hurdle. He also won that year’s Great Staffordshire Chase (below) at Wolverhampton on Overrated.

Edward rode in seven Grand National between 1895 and 1905, finishing third on Biscuit in 1896 and second on Ford of Fyne in 1899. He won the 1896 Great Berkshire Handicap Chase at Windsor on Biscuit and the 1899 Cambridge Chase at Newmarket on Ford of Fyne.

He died in January 1939.
