Jason Maguire

Jason Maguire was born in Ireland on April 13, 1980. He is the nephew of former top jockey Adrian Maguire and is best known for winning the 2011 Grand National on Ballabriggs.

Jason started out in Irish pony races. He rode his first winner over jumps on Search For Peace at Cheltenham on November 12, 1999. He then went on to ride for Tom George’s stable for the next seven years and enjoyed a Cheltenham Festival victory on the Polish-bred Galileo in the 2002 Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle.

However, he was even more successful when linking up with Ginger McCain’s son, Donald McCain Jr. In 2010 they combined to win the same Cheltenham Festival race Jason had won on Galileo – now called the Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle – with Peddlers Cross.

After eight unsuccessful rides in the Grand National, his best previous finish having been sixth on Cloudy Lane in 2008, Jason went on to win it in 2011 on 14/1 shot Ballabriggs.

McCain and Maguire were just catching fire, notching a double at the 2012 Cheltenham Festival with Cinders And Ashes in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and Son Of Flicka in the Coral Cup.

However, on the eve of the 2014 Cheltenham Festival, Jason was seriously injured in a fall at Stratford, suffering internal bleeding, a fractured sternum and had to have part of his liver removed while in an induced coma.

While he was able to return to the saddle and continued riding for the likes of Kim Bailey and Tom George, he was often left with a leg pain. In February 2015 he suffered another bad fall at Musselburgh. In April that year he underwent surgery for slipped discs in his back.

On May 5, 2016 Jason announced his retirement, aged 36, having not ridden since the Musselburgh fall 15 months earlier. He had been riding as first-choice jockey for owners Paul and Clare Rooney and during his time off he had acted as their racing manager. He has continued in that role since quitting the saddle.
