Godfrey Morgan

1830 - 1913

Godfrey Charles Morgan was born on 28 April, 1830, at Rupera Castle in Glamorganshire, and was educated at Eton. He joined the 17th Lancers and served in the Crimean War.

He took part in the historic charge of the Light Brigade in which his mount was Mr.Briggs, a horse, belonging to his elder brother, on which he had previously won the principal steeplechase at Cowbridge. Both Godfrey and Mr Briggs emerged scatheless from the melee to compete once again at the likes of Cardiff, Cowbridge and Abergavenny.

Godfrey won both the Open and the Hunt Steeplechases at Abergavenny on Gadfly and General Bosquet respectively and, later on, riding Mystery, won the first point-to-point steeplechase which ever took place at Melton, beating, in the process, his brother Fred Morgan into second place.

From 1858 to 1875, in which year he succeeded to the title of Lord Tredegar, he was the Conservative member for Brecknock in Parliament. He was also for many years Master of the Tredegar Hunt.

After a long illness, he died on Tuesday morning, 11 March, 1913. He was buried that Friday in the family mausoleum at Bassaleg.

He never married.
