Luca Morgan

Born on October 12, 2001, jump jockey Luca Morgan started out as an amateur rider, then became a conditional jockey with Ben Pauling, initially at Bourton-on-the Water and then at Naunton, Gloucestershire.

He rode his first winner on Hoke Colburn for trainer Brian Barr in an amateur riders’ chase, Ludlow, October 25, 2018. However, standing 5ft 11in and with a lowest riding weight of 10st 9lb, he faced a constant battle with the scales.

During his brief career he won back-to-back renewals of Fontwell Park’s Salmon Spray Hurdle on Quinta Do Mar in 2021 and 2022; landed the Highland National and Southern National, both on Slipway in 2022; and the 2022 Lincolnshire National on Bangers And Cash.

He also enjoyed success aboard Twig, owned by his mother Georgia, at Warwick in October 2022.

Luca enjoyed his finest moment earlier when partnering the Pauling-trained Fiercely Proud to success in the Listed JCB Junior NH Flat Race at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day 2023.

He finished second on No Ordinary Joe in 2023 Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Hurdle but ended the 2022/23 season by winning the champion conditional jockeys’ title with 46 winners, 14 clear of his nearest rival Harry Kimber.

He rode what proved to be his last winner on Mole Court in a two-and-a-half-mile handicap chase at Worcester, July 5, 2023.

On Thursday, November 9, 2023, Luca Morgan announced that he was quitting the saddle with immediate effect. In a statement on social media, the 22-year-old said: “A sad day but today my dream since I was very small and my career since I was 16 comes to an end. It’s been an amazing journey that I’ve loved every second of. I’ve had a war with the scales since I started and it’s time to do what’s right for me and my body.”

He said his body was “not healthy” and “crying out for help” after a prolonged battle with the scales. He rode a total of 91 winners during his career.
