John Mulcahy
John Mulcahy rode over jumps from just after the war until the end of the 1962/63 season. He rode a total of 21 winners, the first of them being on 10-1 shot Copper Bell at Huntingdon on October 23, 1948 for trainer Louis Furman. The second was achieved later that season on Lawless Bridget, again at Huntingdon, on June 6, 1949.

He rode just three winners over the course of the next three seasons, all on a hurdler named Belletrist, but then the tide turned in his favour and he joined forces with David Machin, who trained at Hainton, Lincolnshire.

Machin supplied John with all ten of his winners for the 1953/54 campaign. Seven of these were gained at their local course, Market Rasen, and included doubles at the Boxing Day, January and March fixtures plus another on Easter Monday, making him the track’s leading rider that season. The hurdler Panaenus won three races there, while Mighty Apollo’s Easter Monday chase victory came two days after he’d won at Southwell. John rounded off the season by winning on Fire-Float at the West Norfolk Hunt – now called Fakenham – Whit Monday meeting.

John must have looked forward with relish to the 1954/55 season but who could have guessed that he’d have to wait a year, until Whit Monday 1955, for sole success, on Mighty Apollo at Cartmel. Mighty Apollo provided him with both of his wins for the 1955/56 season, scoring at Nottingham in December and Market Rasen on Easter Monday.

Following a winnerless campaign in 1956/57, he won on David Machin’s chaser Blonde Warrior at Southwell’s 1958 Easter meeting, but then another year elapsed before Blonde Warrior again came good for him at Leicester on April 6, 1959. That was to be the last of John Mulcahy’s winners – in Britain, at least.

It appears that John had a brief spell in Ireland, where he won the Glen of Aherlow Novice Chase at Limerick Junction (known today as Tipperary) aboard Lexador on November 19, 1959.

He continued riding in England for the next four seasons and came close a few times, notably when second on Young Mason, beaten half a length by Gerry Hindley’s mount Mistress Nell at Market Rasen on Easter Monday 1963.

Young Mason was also John’s last ride, finishing fourth, again at Market Rasen, on June 1, 1963.
