George Montgomery

Apprentice jockey George ‘Monty’ Montgomery was born on August 7, 1946. He began his career as an apprentice with Peter Hastings-Bass at Kingsclere. Following Hastings-Bass’s death in 1964, Ian Balding took over the training operation.

He had his first ride in public on Morris Dancer in the Young Entry Apprentice Handicap at Ascot on May 1, 1965, dead-heating for second place with Michael Day’s mount The Swan Checker, the pair being beaten a length and a half by Catkin, ridden by Denis Letherby.

His second ride, also in an apprentice race, was on Abel at Windsor on October 2, 1965, finishing sixth in a field of 21 behind the 6-1 favourite Colewort, partnered by John Hayward.

His third and final ride in public came the following season, on Royal Rebel in a Kempton apprentices’ selling handicap on July 5, 1966. This time he finished third behind Chamcaprice, ridden by Tony Murray, and Michael Day on The Swan Checker.

Monty completed his apprenticeship with Ian Balding at Kingsclere in 1969. He remained in racing for the remainder of his working life. He worked for a variety of trainers, both Flat and National Hunt, including Gavin Hunter, Fulke Walwyn, David Arbuthnott, Colin Crossley and Barry Hills. He now lives in the Lambourn area.
