John Morris

1845 -1896

Riding Galopin, John William Morris won the Derby of 1875 for Prince Batthyany.

John, born in Carshalton, Surrey, began riding in 1863 and his notable victories included Sir Joseph Hawley's Palmer (Liverpool Cup, 1868), Mr Cartwright's Albert Victor (Middle Park Plate, 1870), Lord Falmouth's Cecilia (One Thousand Guineas, 1873) and Lord Dupplin's Petrarch (Prince of Wales's Stakes, 1876).

During the latter days of his career he rode in France, but ill-health cut short his days as a jockey.

John Morris died, penniless and forgotten, in a cellar in Newmarket on May 13, 1896, aged 50. He had cirrhosis of the liver.

Most of his children died young.
