Ron McKenzie

Ronald Hector McKenzie was born on February 7, 1938. He was apprenticed to Ken Cundell at Compton for five years and rode his first winner on Flying Argosy at Newbury on August 14, 1954.

He rated Ryan Price’s The Black Horse, on whom he won at Bath on August 22, 1956, as the best he rode.

After riding seven winners as an apprentice, he emigrated to Australia in 1957 and stayed for six years.

Having returned to Britain, he took out a jump jockey’s licence for the 1967/68

season and rode his first winner over hurdles on Damocles at Ascot on February 21, 1968, a moment he rated the highlight of his career.

He rode one more winner that season – novice hurdler Blue Cheri for Ken Cundell at Warwick on March 25 – but no more after that, relinquishing his licence in 1970.
