Neville Maund

November 1958

Neville William Lea Maund rode as stable jockey for his father and held a National Hunt jockey’s licence between 1955 and1960, riding a total of nine winners. The first of those came on February 8, 1956 aboard Nahama in the Buggins Farm Handicap Hurdle at Haydock Park.

Nahama also provided him with victory on National Hunt racing’s biggest stage when winning the Nailsworth Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham on October 17, 1956, as did Raymond’s Folly, who won a selling hurdle there in January 1957.

He achieved the last of his nine wins on Vistal in a Uttoxeter selling hurdle on Whit Monday, May 18, 1959.

All of Neville’s winners were for his father, christened Leslie William Lea Maund, who trained at Oldbury House, Atherstone, in Warwickshire. At its height in 1958, he had a string of 22 horses.

However, he relinquished his licence in 1960 and downsized to the status of permit holder at nearby Nuneaton, which effectively marked the end of Neville’s career as a jockey.
