William Murray-Threipland

1866 - 1942

William Murray-Threipland, born on 21 December, 1866, was educated at Fettes College, Edinburgh before, in 1885, joining the Grenadier Guards.

He made his riding debut at Lingfield in 1891, winning the Grenadier Guards' Cup on Fenian.

He kept a small stable at Kelso, where he trained many good horses of his own. These included Traynor, on which he won twenty-three races out of twenty-six, and the formidable Frontier, on which he won a further twenty-seven.

Captain Murray-Threipland won the Household Brigade Cup three times: on Frontier in 1893 & 1897, and on Lambay in 1899.

Lambay was also his winning mount in the 1899 Grand Military Gold Cup at Sandown.

He lived at Dale House, Halkirk, Caithness, but, on Wednesday, 24 June 1942, died at his son's residence, Dryburgh Abbey, St Boswells.

He was buried, on Saturday, June 27, in the burial ground inside the ruins of the abbey.
