20-year-old Stephen's victory on Janhoi at Haydock on 9 January, 1965 was his second career win from just six rides. His first had come on Only Me, the only other horse in Fred Perry's Cholmondley stable, at Haydock's previous meeting.

Fred had taken out a licence for Stephen to ride just six weeks earlier.

Only Me, at 33-1, had made virtually all the running to win the Garswood Handicap on 25 November, 1964.

A grey horse, it was trained by Fred Perry for his wife.

His win on Janhoi was not the only reason why Stephen would not forget him.

Two weeks later, (25 January) on the same horse, he broke his right leg just below the knee when coming down at Wolverhampton.
