The youngest of four McNally jump jockey brothers – Owen, Eddie and Gerry being the others – Brendan Peter McNally was the least successful, recording just ten victories during a career that lasted about five years in the 1970s.
His first ride was at Plumpton on September 24, 1973, when his mount, Artillery, held every chance two flights out in the Hive Hurdle but then faded and finished lame. He had to wait until the closing days of the season for his first win, which came at Uttoxeter on May 16, 1974, when the eight-year-old Intra, trained by Guy Bach, ran on strongly to land the Beamhurst Handicap Chase by four lengths. The partnership had been beaten a short head at Bangor on their previous start. Six days after their Uttoxeter success they followed up in the Whitcliffe Handicap Chase at Ludlow, again by four lengths.
Brendan failed to ride a winner the following season but began the 1975/76 campaign well with two wins in August on the novice hurdler Brave Talk, trained by Patrick Haslam, followed by two more on the eight-year-old chaser Super Do. His last win of the season, his sixth, was the first of two victories on horses trained by the great Fulke Walwyn, when Stiphado coasted to victory in the Bowler Novice Handicap Chase, scoring by 12 lengths.
He then endured a wait of almost 18 months before Number Engaged, also trained by Fulke Walwyn, led all the way to take the Okeford Opportunity Handicap Chase at Wincanton. Again, however, this did not lead to a breakthrough.
He had his final win at Fontwell Park on Whit Monday, May 29, 1978, when Major Owen, owned by Robert Waley-Cohen and trained by George Peter-Hoblyn, was successful in the Lavington Challenge Cup Handicap Chase, beating September Rain by three lengths.
He appears to have had only one ride the following season, when Herb Hawken led until approaching the final flight but then faded to finish fourth in the Gowerton Conservative and Unionist Club Novice Hurdle at Worcester on Augst 7, 1978.
