Colin Moss

The son of a Daventry smallholder, Colin John Trevor Moss was born on July 18, 1942, and lived for a time at Ringmere Grounds, Whilton, Daventry.

Between 1956-1961 he was apprenticed to Bob Read for whom, aged 16, he made his first racecourse appearance riding Our Jacqueline at Kempton on September 19, 1958.

Colin's first winner came a year later, on May 16, 1959, riding Lilac Time at Warwick.

He also rode for Nottingham trainer Jack Hardy for whom he won on Short Term on Tuesday, July 15, 1975, giving Colin his 14th winner of the season.

Another good day for the Hardy/Moss partnership came in August 1976 when Colin rode a double for the stable on Pool Money and Palamine.

After a racecourse altercation with jockey Geoff Baxter at Leicester, Colin was floored in the weighing room by that jockey (who would later go on and to whack Lester Piggott in a similar disagreement).

Colin was still going strong in 1983, and, on May 21, rode Boxberger Tamara for Newmarket trainer Mick Ryan in the Dutch 1,000 Guineas at Duindigt.

On February 23, 1967, he married Pat Allen; she gave him a son, Paul Colin.

Colin was at one time retained by Derek Ancil. Colin also rode over hurdles.
