Robert Mann

Article by Chris Pitt

Robert (Bob) Mann is the son of the late jockey and trainer Wilmer Mann. He rode as his father’s stable jockey during the 1970s and first half of the eighties.

Robert Wilmer Mann was born at Bishop’s Itchington, Warwickshire, on November 26, 1951. He gained his first riding success in unusual circumstances at Hexham on May 28, 1973, being gifted a walkover on Kabab. Robert and Kabab were reunited a t Uttoxeter the following day, where this time they beat off the opposition to record Robert’s first ‘proper’ winner.

The highlight of his career came in the 1976 Champion Hurdle, when he rode Flash Imp, who ran the race of his life to finish third behind Night Nurse and Sea Pigeon. Two weeks later he rode the Martin Tate-trained Notification to win the George Wigg Chase at Aintree, half an hour after Rag Trade had won that year’s Grand National.

When Bob eventually relinquished his jockey’s licence he acted as assistant trainer and work rider to his father. He also worked for two years on the Coventry Evening Telegraph.

He has subsequently been employed by the British Horseracing Authority as a starter.
