Russell Monro

Russell H. Monro, born on 8 August 1846, was a gentleman rider who enjoyed his best season in 1872 when he rode the winners of nine steeplechasers in the course of five weeks.

He began riding in public in 1865: he won the 1867 Christchurch Open Race on his own mare, Laura, beating Ace of Trumps by a neck, and rode the same horse to victory in the Kidderminster Hunt Cup later that season.

He also kept a small stud where Goosander, which won for him over £4,000 on the flat, was probably his best thoroughbred. Ridden by Fred Allsopp. it came third in the 1899 Windsor Castle Stakes behind Elopement and Corbels Bay.
