Simon McNeill

Simon Robert Onslow McNeill was born on March 17, 1956, and was apprenticed to David Ringer.

His first winner was Florida King at Wolverhampton on February 12, 1977.

Simon rode until 1998 when, on November 25, he took his last ride. Aged 42, he finished unplaced on Barnane Walk at Chepstow.

After the race, fellow jockeys gathered round him and he was hoisted onto the shoulders of Jimmy Frost & Chris Maude.

Simon said after: 'I escaped serious injury so I was very lucky. I've had a really good innings but it's time to move on.'

He rode 364 winners.

After retiring, he became a starter and was knocked down at the start of the 2014 Grand National while trying to help get the horses in line.

His best wins were on Katabatic in the 1991 Queen Mother Champion Chase and, on the same horse, the 1992 Castleford Chase.
