Mick Mullane

National Hunt jockey Michael Vincent Mullane held a licence between 1960 and 1963 and rode a total of nine winners, all for Tarporley trainer Eric Cousins, to whose stable he was attached.

The first of those wins came on selling hurdler Lustleigh Lad at Wolverhampton on December 27, 1960. The second, also at Wolverhampton, was gained on Ivanhoe Court in a two-mile handicap chase the following month.

He rode just one winner the next season – novice hurdler Flying John at Uttoxeter on Easter Monday – but he came good in the 1962/63 campaign, booting home six winners. Two wins on staying hurdler Rainford, at Nottingham and Manchester, were followed by success on Cousins’ useful Flat handicapper My Timps over hurdles at Doncaster. He then won on another handicap hurdler, Whisky Johnny, at Manchester on Easter Monday, following up at Bangor five days later.

On Whit Monday 1963, he gained his biggest success, winning in the valuable Godfrey Long Handicap Chase at Wetherby on Woodbrown, the best horse he rode over fences. However, that turned out to be not only his last winner but also his final ride in Britain. He returned to his native Ireland the following season where he continued his riding career but met with little success. He did, however, manage to win three two-mile handicap hurdles on a mare named Cross Pearl, at Killarney in July 1965, at Limerick in June 1966 and at Mallow in August 1966.
