Edward Meredith

1904-1960

Although he rode on the Flat in the early 1920s, Edward Ernest Meredith’s only two wins were both under National Hunt rules.

Born in 1904, he was apprenticed to Harry Cottrill and had his first ride at Liverpool on November 12, 1920 when unplaced on Skager Rock in the Westmorland Apprentice Plate.

It was not until Easter Monday, April 5, 1926, that he had his first mount over jumps, and it turned out to be a winning one, when the eight-year-old Chartered, trained by Jim Cramsie at Lambourn, landed the Selling Hurdle at Market Rasen, beating the 5-4 favourite Ganesha by two lengths.

After finishing unplaced at the Quorn Hunt fixture at Loughborough on April 19, Edward and Chartered turned out again the next day at Bridgnorth and won the Tradesmen’s Selling Hurdle by 12 lengths.

It is likely that Chartered was the only horse Edward ever rode over jumps. They had a final outing together the following month when finishing fourth in the Causey Hill Selling Hurdle at Hexham on May 24. He did not renew his licence the following season.

Edward Meredith died in 1960.
