George Morris

George Morris was born in Carshalton, Surrey around 1867 and was apprenticed to James Adams at Epsom.


George rode Hetty to victory in the royal colours at Sandown.

The Prince of Wales presented him with a handsome pin for riding so well.

George, in honour of the event, had his little daughter, who was born soon after, christened Hetty,


He rode for 4 years on the Flat before switching codes. He had a bad racing accident in January 1897 and a fund on his behalf raised £325.

The following summer he was declared bankrupt.


On 3 January 1901, he was found guilty of indecently assaulting a 16-year-old girl on a train on Boxing Day 1900 and was sentenced to 18 months hard labour.


One of his last winners was Wag Eldridge in the Leatherhead Selling Handicap Chase at Gatwick on Thursday, January 4, 1900.
