Augustin Malerba

Article by Alan Trout

Augustin Malerba was one of several South American jockeys who came to Britain at the end

of the 19th century. He was more successful than some, achieving seven wins from less than

20 rides, but his stay was a short one and he did not return.

He made an excellent start with victory on his first ride at Newmarket on May 9, 1899. His

mount was Orecana, Argentine-bred according to the Sporting Life, and the race was the

Maiden Plate over a mile. Orecana proved the win was no fluke when scoring at Lingfield on

June 7, winning the Ford Manor Plate by a head from Regent, the mount of Sam Loates.

Between those two successes, Malerba had come close to scoring on his first ride at Epsom

when La Uruguaya finished runner-up to Knight Of The Thistle, ridden by the great Tod

Sloan, in the Craven Stakes on May 30.

Orecana provided Malerba with another memorable moment when beating Lord Provost in a

match at Leicester on July 19. Lord Provost was ridden by Sam Loates, already well on his

way to being crowned champion jockey that year.

Malerba’s last win was on Little Red Rat in the County Stand Plate at Liverpool on

November 8, just two weeks after the same horse had provided him with his final Newmarket

victory when scoring in the All-Aged Plate. Both races were over five furlongs. Malerba’s

Liverpool win was also his last appearance on an English racecourse.
