Haddington, East Lothian trainer Wilf Crawford was responsible not only for the first horse that Anthony Daniel McKeown rode in public, but also for his only winner.

It was at Sedgefield on Boxing Day 1959 that Tony McKeown made his debut on Thistle, unplaced in the Mordon Novices’ Hurdle (Division 1). Later that afternoon he partnered another of Crawford’s horses, Mossarco in Division 2 of the same race, again finishing unplaced.

It was Mossarco who provided him with his sole success, which came at Ayr on March 14, 1960. Taking the lead two flights from home, Mossarco ran on to land the Slaphouse Novices’ Hurdle (Division 1), beating Archer’s Green, the mount of Johnny Gorman, by four lengths.

Tony only kept his licence for one more season and had no further wins.
