John Mannering

John Mannering

From around a dozen rides in the 1953/54 National Hunt season, John Mannering had one win, the sole success of his career.

His first ride had been on Peeping Abbot, finishing unplaced in the Brickhill Novices’ Hurdle at Towcester on April 25, 1953.

His only victory came at Hereford on Easter Monday, April 19, 1954, courtesy of Manor House in the Novices’ Chase. Trained by Tom Yates at Letcombe Bassett, the seven-year-old had not run since the end of October and had shown very little in two starts that season. However, with John riding the Manor House for the first time and the horse making his debut over fences, they beat Vistal, the mount of Mick Roberts, by four lengths.

Their brief partnership ended after a fall at Ludlow four days later. John’s final ride ended the same way when St. Cross came down in the Wednesfield Novices’ Chase at Wolverhampton on December 28, 1954.
