On at least three occasions David Jonathan Mustow finished second in a race under National Hunt rules before securing what proved to be his only victory. A conditional jockey with Les Kennard, his first ride was at Ascot on October 31, 1984, when Lord Leighton was tailed off in the Valley Gardens Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle.
Later that season he finished second on Holemoor Patrol in a bumper at Hereford, beaten a length and a half by amateur Charlie Brooks on Hasty Gamble. It was by the same margin that his mount Handy Lane was defeated by Hywel Davies on Beech Grove in a novices’ hurdle at Taunton in November 1986.
Finally, at Ludlow on May 24, 1988, David drove the six-year-old Charlie Burton to victory by two lengths in the Oteley Novices’ Hurdle. It was the third time David’s had ridden him, the first having ended dramatically when tailed off Charlie Burton crashed through the wing of the last flight in a race at Worcester. At the same course just six days before their Ludlow success the pair had been second, beaten five lengths by Graham McCourt’s mount Mubdi.
David rode for at least one more season but without adding to his score.
Charlie Burton, in 1988, was David Mustow's only winner
