Peter Maher

1910-1984


Peter Patrick Maher was born in Ireland on October 19, 1910. He became apprenticed to Tommy Burns and George Wellesley.

He rode his first winner on Miss Marlhill at the Curragh, September 17, 1929.

Peter rode several big winners over a period of more than 20 years, including the Royal Hunt Cup and Goodwood Stakes twice each, the Chester Cup, Ascot Gold Vase and Northumberland Plate. 

His last winner was Norcrest, trained by Harry Maw, in the Friday Maiden Handicap at Pontefract on June 8, 1956.

His last ride was on Young Winnie (unplaced) at Doncaster on June 8, 1957.

Peter Maher died at Newmarket on November 10, 1984, aged 74.
