Godfrey Maundrell

Godfrey Maundrell was born on September 9, 1948. A Marlborough arable and dairy farmer, he rode in races for more than four decades and made headlines when riding winners under rules when in his sixties. He’d inherited his farm from his father, and being from farming stock accepted injuries were part of working with horses and other animals.

He notched his first treble at the age of 61 at the Royal Artillery point-to-point meeting at Larkhill on January 23, 2010, on Maglinn River, Spider’s Nephew and Lisadell King. That same year he won three hunter chases on Lisadell King, who he also owned and trained, at Leicester, Fakenham and Stratford. He rode his 150th point-to-point winner the following year when aged 62.

He had been diagnosed with cancer aged 47 but was determined to achieve as much as he could for as long as he could. He continued to ride out until March 2018.

Godfrey Maundrell died on November 3, 2018, aged 70, following complications from surgery and other cancer treatments. He left a wife, Angie, and his step-son Charlie.
