Owners and trainers avoided him until he was offered the ride on Kisber for the 1876 Derby. The 2 minutes, 44 seconds which the race took to run revived his fortunes. Kisber started at 4/1. Petrarch, at 2/1, was preferred in the market. In the event, Petrarch patently failed to stay, finishing fourth, allowing Charlie Maidment’s mount to canter home a five-length winner. Charlie said later that Kisber was the best he rode.
