Charlie Maidment

1845 - 1926

Born at Sixpenny Handley, Dorset, on April 4, 1845, Charlie is the only jockey to have ridden four Lincoln winners‭ – ‬Indigestion‭ (‬1868‭)‬,‭ ‬Royal Rake‭ (‬1870‭)‬,‭ ‬Guy Dayrell‭ (‬1872‭) ‬and Vestminster‭ (‬1873‭)‬.‭

‬Charlie also dead-heated twice for the Jockeys‭’ ‬Championship‭ – ‬in‭ ‬1870‭ ‬with W.‭ ‬Gray‭ (‬76‭ ‬winners each‭) ‬and in‭ ‬1871‭ ‬with George Fordham‭ (‬86‭ ‬each‭)‬.‭

In‭ ‬1872‭ ‬he won the Derby aboard Cremorne.‭ ‬This win,‭ ‬and others which followed as a result,‭ ‬amassed Maidment a large fortune,‭ ‬only for him to squander it away.‭ ‬On November‭ ‬1875‭ ‬in Cambridge,‭ ‬he was cited by the Bankruptcy Courts.‭

Owners and trainers avoided him until he was offered the ride on Kisber for the‭ ‬1876‭ ‬Derby.‭ ‬The‭ ‬2‭ ‬minutes,‭ ‬44‭ ‬seconds which the race took to run revived his fortunes.‭ ‬Kisber started at‭ ‬4/1.‭ ‬Petrarch,‭ ‬at‭ ‬2/1,‭ ‬was preferred in the market.‭ ‬In the event,‭ ‬Petrarch patently failed to stay,‭ ‬finishing fourth,‭ ‬allowing Charlie Maidment’s mount to canter home a five-length winner.‭ ‬Charlie said later that Kisber was the best he rode.‭

Lessons had not been learnt however,‭ ‬and once again the winnings were squandered.‭ ‬He had his last winner in‭ ‬1891‭ ‬and was forced to ride exercise on the heath until very late in life.‭

He died‭ ‬at Newmarket on Friday morning, December‭ ‬17th‭, ‬1926, ‬aged‭ ‬81.

When single and aged 21 in 1886, Charlie had lived at Blandford.

He married Mary Vickery Percy (1845-1874. She gave him four daughters: Elizabeth Vickery (born 1866), Selina (1868) Annie Vickery (1869) and Mary Vickery (1870).
