Ian Mongan

Ian Mongan was born in Glasgow on March 23, 1979. He began his career as an amateur rider on the Flat and over jumps with Sussex trainer Paddy Butler. After linking up with Brighton trainer Gary Moore he enjoyed a first career win aboard Harik at Lingfield on March 3, 1998 and, after opting to focus solely on the Flat, turned professional in January 2000.

He amassed his best tally of winners in 2002 with 82 wins and claimed the champion all-weather jockey title the following year when riding for Nick Littmoden’s stable.

He rode the Mick Channon-trained Baddam to famous victories in both the Ascot Stakes and Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2006. However, his career highlight came in August 2011 when landing the Group 1 Juddmonte International on Twice Over for Sir Henry Cecil, with whom he enjoyed a successful partnership as second-jockey to the legendary trainer behind Tom Queally.

Ian rode his last winner on Songbird at Yarmouth on June 13, 2013, for Lady Cecil, her first day with a licence following the death of her husband. He announced his retirement, aged 34, the following week due to problems with his weight, having ridden over 750 winners.

He is married to Epsom trainer Laura Mongan, who became the first female trainer to land the St Leger when Harbour Law won in the hands of George Baker in 2016. Her previous biggest win as a trainer came when First Avenue won the Imperial Cup over hurdles at Sandown in 2013. Ian is now a fundamental part of his wife’s training operation.
