Danny Morgan

1912 - 1984

Frank Morgan was a skilful Irish trainer who frequently and successfully raided England. He won the 1925 Cheltenham Gold Cup with Ballinode.

His nephew, Danny Morgan, had the distinction of riding for three kings of England, winning for two - Edward Vlll and George Vl.

He was born in County Waterford on April 17, 1912, and apprenticed to Basil Jarvis from 1924 - 1927.

Danny grew too heavy for the flat and switched to jumps, riding mainly for Ivor Anthony. It was a good move; together they won the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1938 with Morse Code.

Danny began training in 1947, his greatest success coming with Roddy Owen in the 1959 Gold Cup.

He retired in 1973.

Danny Morgan died in May 1984, aged 72.
