Delwyn Morgan

1930-1995

Delwyn Gwilyn Morgan rode two winners over jumps in the early 1950s. He had his first ride when Weaton Green was unplaced in the Beginners’ Hurdle (Division 1) at Plumpton on December 14, 1946.

It would be just under four years before he enjoyed his first success, which came at Woore on October 12, 1950, when Signal Call won the Swan Selling Hurdle. Trained by Morgan Scannell, the five-year-old had been ridden by champion jockey Tim Molony on his previous start when finishing second at Bangor-on-Dee in April. Now, with Delwyn in the saddle for the first time, Signal Call took the lead at the last flight and beat Pamira, the mount of Tommy Shone, by two lengths.

Signal Call changed owners at the post-race auction and Delwyn had to wait more than a year for his other victory. This came courtesy of the six-year-old Silvergrain in the White Hart Selling Handicap Chase at Windsor on December 15, 1951, just ten days after falling with Delwyn when making his seasonal debut at Plumpton. This time it was a different story, with Silvergrain taking advantage of the departure on long-time leader Edwin at the second last fence to beat Trapan, ridden by Fred Winter, by two lengths. Again, the winner was sold after the race.

Delwyn had no more wins. His final ride was on Steel Drop, a faller in the Hastings Selling Handicap Chase at Plumpton on Easter Monday, April 6, 1953.

Delwyn Morgan died in 1995.
