James Francis Mason was born on March 20 1901 and was apprenticed to J P Hallick & A D Sadler.
James was only 14 when he rode his first winner at Alexandra Park.
After WW1 he rode over the jumps in France. Returning to Britain he became a successful trainer.
He finished second in the 1930 Grand National on Melleray's Belle.
He died on December 29, 1972, aged 71.
