Henry Millar

1900-1972

Article by Alan Trout

Henry Randolph Millar rode on the Flat for a decade but his only wins, four in total, came over jumps, and all on the same horse.

Born in 1900, he rode for the first time when finishing unplaced on Aureate, who was also making her debut, in the Clermont Two-Year-Old Plate at Hurst Park on May 10, 1924.

Although he had at least one ride on the Flat for most seasons after that, his first victory came under National Hunt rules at Nottingham on December 10, 1934, when Rightun won the Elvaston Chase. Henry had ridden the four-year-old on his last four starts, which had included a second place and a fall, but now they beat Baba, the mount of John Goswell, by a lengths and a half.

Henry and Rightun were in the winner’s enclosure again later in the season after landing the Brocklesby Handicap Chase at the annual Brocklesby Hunt fixture on April 6, 1935, beating Jack Bissill on Minto Crag by three lengths.

Having had 22 races during that 1934/35 campaign, Rightun was given time to recover but was already making his seventh start of the 1935/36 season when teaming up with Henry to land the King’s Norton Handicap Chase at Birmingham on November 26, finishing ten lengths in front of champion jockey Gerry Wilson on Phaldarill.

On their next outing at Leicester on December 2, there was the same margin of victory when Henry had his final win with Rightun in the Broxhills Chase. The gelding changed stables soon after that success, and Henry rode him no more.

His final ride was on Zandeyn, unplaced in the Abbeydore Hurdle at Hereford on Easter Monday, March 25, 1940.

Henry Millar died in 1972. His winners were, in chronological order:

1. Rightun, Nottingham, December 10, 1934

2. Rightun, Brocklesby Hunt, April 6, 1935

3. Rightun, Birmingham, November 26, 1935

4. Rightun, Leicester, December 2, 1935
