A conditional jockey with Market Harborough-based trainer Michael Chapman, Shaun Mitchell rode four winners during the second half of the 1980s.
He finished last of seven on his first ride aboard First Knowe in the Black Watch Conditional Jockeys’ Selling Handicap Hurdle at Perth on April 18, 1984.
He was given plenty of opportunities, with over 100 rides in the 1986/87 season alone, and one of them gave him his first success. Six-year-old Padykin, trained by Michael Chapman, overhauled Rising Sovereign on the flat and landed the Lowdham Handicap Hurdle at Southwell on October 3, winning by a length and a half.
Another six-year-old, Dallas Smith, gave Shaun his second win when taking the Hartington Novices’ Hurdle at Cartmel on May 25, 1987, then on the same course two days later Eastern Player held off the challenge of Moon Jester to land the Crake Novices’ Hurdle by three-quarters of a length.
Shaun had his final victory at Market Rasen on March 11, 1988, when Silly Jill led all the way and landed the Cranwell Selling Hurdle by three lengths.
