Robert William Moore was a conditional with former jump jockey Gerry Enright and had four wins, starting with Reedling in the Yarsop Conditional Jockeys’ Novices’ Hurdle at Hereford on August 26, 1989. The four-year-old, trained by Enright, was prominent throughout and drew away to win by three lengths. The pair had one more start together when finishing a distant fourth at Fontwell Park in October.
He had luck on his side when riding his second winner at Kempton Park on November 2. His mount, Bad Habits, looked destined for second place in the Uxbridge Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Chase when the clear leader, Mister Feathers, fell at the last fence. The fortunate nine-year-old winner had finished a creditable fourth with Robert aboard on his only previous start that season. He kept the ride and was placed three times from four subsequent outings.
More than a year elapsed before Robert won again, but at Hereford on December 22, 1990 there was again an element of good fortune about the victory of Celtic Chimes in the Cowslip Conditional Jockeys’ Selling Hurdle, the six-year-old being left in front when the clear leader fell two out, enabling Celtic Chimes to come home 12 lengths ahead of his nearest rival.
It was over three years later that Robert had his fourth, and final, win when Barney’s Gift, trained by another former jump jockey, Owen Brennan, landed the Toft Newton N.H. Flat Race at Market Rasen on March 11, 1994, despite hanging badly left on at least two occasions. The stewards overruled an objection by the rider of the second.
Robert had no further success despite riding for at least two more seasons.
