Lawrence Mark Mancini made a promising start to his career over jumps with a win on just his second ride. He had seven victories altogether during the first half of the 1980s.
He was a conditional jockey with the formidable Captain Ryan Price and had his first ride at Fontwell Park on October 20, 1980, when Rose Charter was unplaced in the Eastergate Novices’ Hurdle.
His first winner was Crouton, the 13/8 favourite, overcoming a mistake at the last flight and taking the lead near the line to land the Shaddoxhurst Opportunity Handicap Hurdle at Folkestone on December 16 by a length and a half.
He did not have many rides in the next couple of seasons but eventually returned to the winner’s enclosure at Huntingdon on Bank Holiday Monday, August 29, 1983, when Mr Linnet was driven out to beat Getting Warmer by three lengths in the Alconbury Selling Handicap Hurdle.
A victory by half a length on Venturion came next in the October Selling Hurdle at Plumpton, followed by a much easier success when Sarah’s Venture finished eight lengths clear of Norfolk Realm at the end of the Royal Borough Novices’ Hurdle (Division 2) at Windsor on November 21. The four-year-old Sarah’s Venture was trained by Con Horgan, for whom Lawrence was by then riding. Just three days after their Windsor success, Sarah’s Venture scored again when taking the Young Farmers’ Novices’ Hurdle at Wincanton.
John Davies, who had trained the first three winners of Lawrence’s career, was also responsible for his fifth victory of the season when To-Onero-Mou finished second in the Littleton Handicap Hurdle at Kempton on February 24 but was awarded the race when first past the post Woolooware was disqualified following Lawrence’s objection for being “bumped and unbalanced after the last”.
His final win came at Plumpton on Easter Monday 1985 when The Enid, also trained by John Davies, registered a comfortable 15-length success in the Easter Selling Hurdle.
It is likely that his final ride was when Mighty Member was a faller at the third flight in the Hellenic Restaurant Novices’ Hurdle at Fontwell Park on Whit Monday, May 26, 1986. After quitting the saddled he became Con Horgan’s head lad.
