Dermot McCalmont

1887 - 1968

Born on April 10, 1887, Dermot Hugh Bingham McCalmont, son of Sir Hugh McCalmont, rode Vinegar Hill to win the 1911 Grand Military Gold Cup.

Dermot's cousin was Harry McCalmont, owner of the triple crown winner Isinglass.

He rode many winners on the Flat before taking twenty-eight rides over the sticks, of which he won on four.

Dermot won his first point-to-point when winning the Royal Military College in 1906 and it was at Kempton on March 19, 1909, on Johnstown Lad, that he won his first steeplechase proper.

Having retired from the saddle, he became an owner. His most famous horse was The Tetrarch, said to be the fastest horse of all time. The horse was acquired at the Doncaster sales in 1912 for 1,300 guineas. Dermot's trainer was Atty Persse (another cousin) at Stockbridge.
