James MacDonald

(1856 - 1888)

James MacDonald was born in July 1856, the son of a Darlington tailor. He enjoyed a fair measure of success as a jockey, gaining his biggest win on Hilarious in the 1877 Cesarewitch.

He also won the 1876 Great Yorkshire Handicap on Beranglier and the 1880 Prince of Wales's Stakes on Zealot.

He died of consumption in Newmarket on September 8, 1888, aged 32.

His younger brother William Ferguson MacDonald (1858-1881) won the Cesarewitch twice, on Chippendale in 1879 and Foxhall in 1881. He was killed in a fall at Liverpool in 1881, shortly after his second Cesarewitch victory.
