Stuart Mann

Stuart Mann held a jump jockey’s licence during the second half of the 1960s and rode five winners. The first of those came at Stratford on May 13, 1966, when 100-7 chance Trust, owned and trained by Chris Taylor at Bishops Cleeve, on the outskirts of Cheltenham, landed the May Novices’ Hurdle (Division 1) by a short head from Brim, the mount of Johnny Lehane.

He failed to register a win in either of the next two seasons, coming closest when his mount Justice Walk was beaten a length by Jeff Nutley on Raphael in the Downs Selling Handicap Chase, a race for novice riders, at Sandown Park on April 3, 1968. A stewards’ inquiry followed but the result was unchanged. A picture of Raphael leading Justice Walk over the last fence appeared in the following day’s Daily Mirror.

Stuart’s other four wins came in the autumn of 1968 when he was associated with the successful south-west trainer Les Kennard. He began with victory on Eastern Delight in the Osmington Hurdle at Wincanton on the last day of October. Ridden to success on his previous outing at Newbury seven days earlier by Aly Branford, the seven-year-old easily beat Duneed, the mount of Willie Robinson, by ten lengths.

The grey mare Flying Leaf, making her seasonal reappearance, came next, taking the Red Maru Handicap Chase at Wincanton on November 21, running on strongly to beat Paul Kelleway on Brumby Hill by a length and a half.

Seven days later, Stuart and Flying Leaf followed up with a more comfortable success when landing the Kingston-St-Mary Handicap Chase at Taunton by three lengths. Later that same afternoon, Stuart had what proved to be his final victory when Peace Offering made all to score in the Blacknoller Junior Chase, for four-, five- and six-year-olds, having been placed on both of his previous starts with Start on board.

Despite having more than 50 rides during that 1968/69 season, Stuart had no more wins and soon after relinquished his licence.

Stuart Mann’s winners were, in chronological order:

1. Trust, Stratford-on-Avon, Mat 13, 1966

2. Eastern Delight, Wincanton, October 31, 1968

3. Flying Leaf, Wincanton, November 21, 1968

4. Flying Leaf, Taunton, November 18, 1968

5. Peace Offering, Taunton, November 18, 1968
