Seamus Mackey

National Hunt jockey Seamus Christopher Mackey rode as a conditional jockey for Axbridge, Somerset trainer Gerald Ham in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He rode around 20 winners from limited opportunities and enjoyed his best season in 1989/90 with a score of eight, all of them trained by Ham.

He rode 250/1 outsider Stearsby in the 1992 Grand National. They got as far as Valentine’s on the first circuit where Stearsby refused.

After quitting the saddle, Seamus remained in the south-west and started a livery yard for breaking, schooling and retraining racehorses. He then began training point-to-pointers and sent out his first winner, Testoftime, at the Black Forest Club meeting on December 1, 2013.

In partnership with Amy Bourne (now Mackey), who brought vast experience from the world of showjumping and other areas of equestrianism, they bought 32-acre Lakeview Stud at Butcombe, near Bristol Airport. From there they have built up a successful livery yard, incorporating the Lakeview Equestrian Pony Club giving riding lessons in riding, grooming and stable management for adults and children, while continuing with the retraining of racehorses.
