Pat McCabe

Pat with Edwulf

Born in Ireland on February 26, 1975, Patrick Anthony McCabe served his apprenticeship with a number of trainers including Mick Ryan, Paul Felgate and Willie Musson. He rode his first winner on Daisy May, trained by Andrew Reid, in a Brighton selling handicap on April 2, 1992. However, it was for veteran trainer Jack O’Donoghue that he scored his biggest wins, recording back-to-back victories on Hello Mister in the 1994 and 1995 renewals of the Portland Handicap. In his homeland, he won the Irish Cesarewitch.

He enjoyed his most successful season in 1998 with 31 winners, many of which were supplied by trainer Norma Macauley. The following season he registered 28 wins, the majority being for Mick Ryan. However, his totals fell to single figures with the dawn of the new millennium, with scores of five for the 2002 and 2003 seasons.

Pat rode his last winner on Ken’s Dream at Newmarket’s July Course on June 25, 2004. He had just five rides in 2005, his final season as a jockey, the last of which was on Our Glenard at Folkestone on September 3, 2005.

He returned to Ireland and now works for Joseph O’Brien. Among the horses he looks after is Edwulf, winner of the 2018 Irish Gold Cup.
