Ian Moulton

National Hunt jockey Ian Moulton rode as a conditional in the mid-1970s for Tony Dickinson, who, at that time, was training as Gisburn, near Clitheroe, in Lancashire. He held a licence between 1973 and 1976 and rode a total of six winners, achieving his most important success in the Durham National.

He rode his first two winners on the same afternoon, winning both divisions of the Burgage Opportunity Novice Hurdle at Southwell on Maundy Thursday, April 11, 1974. Both were trained by Tony Dickinson and ran out easy winners, Tostal Time scoring by 15 lengths in division one and Algajola landing division two by six lengths.

Ian rode four winners from 33 mounts the following season, the first of them being the biggest, steering 5-4 favourite Miles Apart to a 20-length victory in Sedgefield’s Durham National in March 1975. They followed up in a three-mile handicap chase at Uttoxeter on Easter Monday.

Later that month, back at Uttoxeter, Ian rode Dickinson’s good chaser Winter Rain to win the Queen’s Royal Lancers Challenge Cup, getting home by a neck from Bob Davies on Garnishee. Winter Rain was the evens favourite and the best horse Ian rode during his brief career. It was also his last winner. He held a licence for one more season but had no further success.

Ian Moulton’s winners were, in chronological order:

1. Tostal Time, Southwell, April 11, 1974
