Raymond Martin

Raymond Martin was born on August 28, 1936. He served his apprenticeship with Jack O’Donoghue from 1952 to 1957 and went on to ride four winners under National Hunt rules.

He had his first ride when unplaced on Kumasi King in the Eden Vale Hurdle at Lingfield Park on March 21, 1957. Kumasi King was also his first winner when landing the Littleton Four-Year-Old Hurdle at Kempton on 28 December, 1957.

Despite being unable to claim his 7lb allowance due to the value of the race, Ray’s day in the sun came at Sandown on Saturday March 14, 1959, when, aboard Langton Heath, he won the Imperial Cup at 100/6. Riding with polish and great confidence, the 7lb claimer caught the long-distance hurdler Mariner’s Dance, ridden by Arthur Freeman, with a strong run on the flat. It was Ray’s sole success of the season.

Langton Heath was trained by Tom Griffiths, who sent out horses from his Mayfields Stables in Kingswood, Surrey.

Ray won again on Langton Heath when taking the Berkshire Handicap Hurdle at Newbury on November 28, 1959. He had his final success at Hurst Park on January 7, 1960, when 2-1 favourite Highwood, also trained by Griffiths, won the Bushey Park Novices’ Hurdle (Dividson 2), receiving 21lb from the Fred Winter-ridden runner-up Take All, who he beat by half a length.
