W. Murray

W. Murray scored his biggest success on Endsleigh in the 1867 Great Metropolitan Handicap at Epsom. He also won the 1865 Chesterfield Cup on Redmire.

He was apprenticed to private trainer Anthony Cowley at Heddington and rode his first winner in 1864. His was a successful apprentice, his best year being in 1846 when he rode 43 winners. He completed his apprenticeship in 1847. He rode for another two years but suffered a badly broken collarbone in a fall from a horse named Achiever at Croydon on May 8, 1869. He failed to recover sufficiently to continue riding in races and, thus, his short but successful career was nipped in the bud.
