Jimmy McCarthy

James Andrew McCarthy was born on November 24, 1969. His career in the saddle spanned more than 25 years, during which time he rode almost 500 winners and took part in six Grand Nationals.

He rode his first winner on Donna Del Largo at Warwick on December 11, 1989. Among the many good horses he rode were Young Snugfit, Large Action, Coulton and Mysilv.

His big wins included the 1994 John Parratt Memorial Chase on Young Snugfit, the 1999 Tote Gold Trophy on Decoupage, the 2004 Charlie Hall Chase on Chrystal D’Ainay, and the 2009 Sefton Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree on the Renee Robeson-trained Ogee, the latter being his sole Grade One success.

It was on Ogee that he rode his last winner, a length-and-a-half success in the Denis Wright Memorial Handicap Hurdle at Southwell on July 23, 2013.

With Ogee having given him his only Grade One victory, Jimmy was particularly keen to win one more race on him, especially as Renee Robeson had supported him so well during the latter part of his career. He promptly announced his retirement on returning to the Southwell winner’s enclosure.

Jimmy’s career was largely injury-free. Remarkably for one of his profession, he was never off with an injury for more than three weeks at one time.

He then became assistant trainer to Jamie Osborne. His role has included supervising stable star Toast Of New York when finishing a short-head runner up in the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Classic.
