He crossed the Irish Sea to Britain in 1953 and rode one winner from 25 rides that year, namely 20/1 shot Knockmealdown for trainer Johnny Dines, at Windsor on June 27.

He failed to register a victory the following year but rode two winners within a fortnight from 56 rides in 1955. They were Romany Minstrel at Kempton on June 4, and Same Again in a two-year-old seller at Worcester on June 18. He had further cause for celebration later that year when marrying Deanne Field on November 26, 1955. She would deliver him two sons, Paul and John.
