After riding two winners on the Flat in 1975, Kenneth Michael Milner returned a few years later to record three wins over jumps.
Apprenticed to Bill Watts at Richmond, he had his first success when Chantro, trained by his boss, led all the way and held off the challenge of Red Dawn to land the Corraith Handicap at Ayr on August 6 by half a length. His second win came when Royal Orbit finished strongly to take the Brompton Apprentice Handicap at Thirsk on September 5. He had a dozen rides that season but did not add to his total.
He relinquished his licence in 1976 and it was some time before he changed codes. He made a quiet start to his career over jumps when Gold Harmony, who was also making his debut, was well beaten in the Morden Novices’ Hurdle (Division 1, Part 1) at Sedgefield on December 27, 1982.
It was not until Cartmel on Saturday, May 28, 1983 that he registered his first jumps success, then later in the afternoon his second. Four Fathoms came first, taking the lead at the final fence and keeping on over the long half-mile run-in to beat Jonjo O’Neill’s mount Kumon Sunshine by five lengths and land the Sir Ivor Julian Memorial Handicap Chase. Four races later, Vitingo narrowly got the better of a duel with Secret Finale to take the Cavendish Novices’ Hurdle by a head.
Both those Cartmel winners were trained by permit holder John Parkes, and he also supplied Ken with his final success when Another Thrill came through to lead at the final flight and finish eight lengths clear of Mr Denetop at the end of the Sisterpath Novices’ Hurdle at Kelso on September 10, 1983. (The form book result incorrectly gives his surname as ‘Miller’.)
Despite having more than three dozen rides that season, Ken did not win again. He rode for the final time at Perth on May 24, 1984, when Golden Ty finished fourth of five in the Gillie Bros. Bookmakers Novices’ Hurdle.
