There were three wins over jumps for Patrick James Maddock during the first half of the 1990s.
He rode as a conditional for Banbury-based Mark Wilkinson, who trained Edward Courage’s horses, and it was in Courage’s familiar maroon and yellow halved colours that he had his first victory when the eight-year-old Tiber Melody, making his seasonal debut, took the lead three fences from home and drew clear to beat the Paul Nicholls-trained Salcombe Harbour by eight lengths in the Oldbury Claiming Chase at Wolverhampton on Boxing Day 1991.
He gained his second success when four-year-old Rhoman Coin, trained by Brian Rothwell, narrowly edged out Don’t Tell The Wife at the end of the Duncote Maiden Hurdle at Towcester on Easter Monday 1992, winning by a short head. Rhoman Coin started at 25-1, having been beaten a long way over the same course just two days earlier.
It was not until February 8, 1995 that Pat had his third, and final, victory when Landed Gentry, trained by Chris Broad, easily won the Kilfane Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle at Ascot, beating Fool’s Errand by 12 lengths. They finished fourth at Sandown nine days later, their only other start together. Pat had about 20 rides that season but no more victories.
