After a promising start with four winners in his first season, Sean Eugene McDonald had to be content with just three further successes.
His first ride was at Wetherby on October 13, 1982, when Tyela was one of 20 runners (mainly ridden by conditionals) in the Amateur Riders’ Association National Hunt Flat Race. They finished unplaced.
He rode his first winner at Fakenham on March 18, 1983, when leading all the way on the seven-year-old Quistador to land the Downham Market Handicap Hurdle by four lengths. They had finished second on their previous start together, albeit beaten ten lengths. Before the season was over, Sean had won again on Quistador and recorded two victories on the handicap hurdler Shuttle D’Or, both horses being trained by Michael Chapman.
The next three seasons followed a similar pattern, comprising one win in October then nothing for the remainder of the campaign.
His final success was at Wetherby on October 16, 1985, when Connaught Queen, trained by Ian Vickers, led approaching the last flight and drew clear to win the ‘Turn to Yorkshire’ Conditional jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle by 12 lengths. Sean never rode the five-year-old again and had his final ride at Devon & Exeter at Devon & Exeter on April 4, 1986, when Foxe’s Castle finished ninth of 16 starters in the Haldon Moor Novices’ Hurdle (Division 1).
