John Meddings rode just three winners as an apprentice at the start of the 20th century. After more than a decade without a licence, he made a short-lived comeback in 1921 but was even less successful with only one more winner to his credit.

John Joseph Benjamin Meddings was born in 1882. He was apprenticed to John Dawson Junior at Newmarket and had his first ride when finishing unplaced on St. Edmunds in the Apprentices Plate at Newmarket on April 11, 1899.

His first win was gained in another race for apprentices when Blue Diamond, the odds-on favourite, won at Brighton in June 28, 1900, beating two rivals. Later that same year he won yet another apprentices’ contest when Rambling Katie beat four rivals at Northampton on October 31.

His third victory came at Worcester on October 25, 1901 aboard Sister Olive, who landed the Deerhurst Selling Nursery Handicap by two lengths,

Having completed his apprenticeship, John held a full jockey’s licence in 1903, 1907 and 1910 but had few opportunities and no winners. Following an eleven-year hiatus, he renewed his licence in 1921 but had to wait until March 22, 1922 to ride his next – and last – winner on Silver Thistle in the Kesteven Handicap at Lincoln.

He had his final ride on San Rafael, who finished unplaced in the Durham Handicap at Hurst Park on April 29, 1922.

John Meddings subsequently emigrated to Australia, dying in New South Wales in 1941.
