Joe Morley

Joseph (Joe) Morley was born in Dumfries in 1934. He became apprenticed to Sam Armstrong at Newmarket in 1950, hoping to become a famous jockey.

Joe rode his first winner on the Armstrong-trained Le Texas in a Newmarket apprentices’ handicap on May 13, 1953. He won similar contests on Coquet Light at Manchester in June and Ensorceleur at Hurst Park in July before being reunited with Le Texas to win a race against senior jockeys at Redcar.

Joe had a total of 30 mounts in 1953, winning on three of them, starting with Kithyra, who made all to win an apprentices’ plate on the first day of Newmarket’s Craven Meeting. It was late September before he next visited the winner’s enclosure, finishing fast to win on Phylleen at Thirsk. He ended the season with a victory on Criticism for Richmond trainer Jack Ormston at Leicester in November.

Joe rode just one winner from 32 mounts in 1954, that being on King’s Fell for the splendidly-named Coombe Bissett trainer Hewitt Henry Golightly.at Worcester on May 15, 1954. His apprenticeship ended the following month so Joe took out a professional jockey’s licence. He rode mostly as a freelance thereafter, although he did have one season based with Hednesford trainer Bob Ward. He continued to hold a licence until 1961 but rode no further winners.
